Camps Bay High School makes food hampers for families
While positivity is hard to muster up during these difficult times, a Cape Town school is going the extra mile to see that the coronavirus doesn’t negatively affect their pupils and their families.
Caring volunteers and pupils from Camps Bay High School put their helper hats on and contributed towards packing hampers complete with all basic food necessities needed to feed a family for one week.
“We say that we are a caring school, and now that a real need has arisen, we have done some practical caring. While I may be able to fill my trolley at the shops, we have some pupils who are not sure if they will have food over this time as their home income is from work that is not secure and poorly paid. Being able to offer them food security is incredible. Thanks to the moms (Cara Kahn, Simone Segall, Janine Thetard) that have made this happen and to Carol Van Der Spuy and Kirsten Mobsby for helping in the co-ordination,” said Camps Bay High School Principal, Dave de Korte.

The school realised that the next few weeks could be tough for families, especially those who are already under financial pressure, and without delay they put a plan of action in place to help those in need.
“So, we decided to put together a food hamper for these students, identified by their tutor teachers as possibly being in need of assistance,” said the school in a post to their Facebook page.
The hampers all packed up and ready to go.
As part of their programme to support learners and their families in this time of need, the school will issue food parcels like the ones they packed this week, every week for at least the next three weeks.
While many people automatically think of themselves and allow the fear of the pandemic to lead them to panic buy, this local school went above and beyond their call of duty to consider others before themselves in a truly touching way.
We hope they will serve as an example to schools and establishments everywhere.
